About the Pattern
The Nine Patch is one of the most enduring American quilt patterns, traditionally formed from nine equal squares arranged in a three-by-three grid. Here, five printed squares alternate with four white squares, allowing each block to appear almost suspended against the expansive white background.
Fabric
A charming assortment of period cottons in dusty pink, indigo and faded blue, lavender, brown, yellow, and red. Tiny florals, geometrics, plaids, and novelty prints are scattered throughout, finished with a delicate pink printed border.
Condition
Good vintage condition with visible age, fading, scattered discoloration, and areas of wear consistent with a crib quilt that was used and loved. The hand quilting, piecing, embroidered details, and border remain beautifully visible.
***Previous owner told me that this quilt was made by their Great Grandmother who was an Edincott. A descendent of John Endecott (also spelled Endicott), who was the first local governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colonytotaling 16 years in office as the longest-serving governor in the region's colonial history.
