Hand pieced and hand quilted, this wonderfully timeworn Ocean Waves quilt is composed of hundreds of small triangles arranged around large soft-pink squares. Indigo and faded blues dominate the scrappy palette, joined by checks, plaids, stripes, reds, blacks, and muted shirtings. The repeated triangles flow continuously across the surface, creating the sense of movement that gives the Ocean Waves pattern its name. Dense hand quilting adds beautiful texture throughout.
Historical Period
Circa 1880–1900. The mixture of indigo and cadet blues, woven checks and plaids, shirtings, small calicoes, and muted reds is characteristic of late-19th-century scrap quilting. The varied fabrics suggest the maker was likely working from saved clothing and household remnants accumulated over time.
