Hand pieced and densely hand quilted, this wonderfully timeworn Nine-Patch Variation quilt features an assortment of small pieced blocks scattered across a warm red printed ground. Each block carries its own combination of checks, tiny prints, shirtings, browns, greens, blues and pinks, giving the quilt the unmistakable character of a scrap-bag creation assembled from fabrics saved over time.
Historical Period
Circa 1880–1900. The varied checks, dark prints, small-scale calicoes and late-19th-century cottons are consistent with quilts of this period; comparable American nine-patch quilts are documented from the late 1800s.

The Nine-Patch is one of the oldest and most enduring American patchwork structures. Here, the maker varies the colors and placement within individual blocks and sets them against large alternating printed squares, creating a wonderfully irregular, make-do interpretation rather than a rigid repeating design.
Condition
Very well-loved antique condition with extensive age-related wear, including widespread fabric loss, exposed batting, thinning, fraying, fading, staining and weakened areas throughout. The heavy wear gives the quilt a particularly primitive, well-loved appearance while substantial areas of the original hand quilting and early fabrics remain visible.
