Likely dating to the late Victorian era, c. 1880–1900, when Nine Patch quilts remained a familiar and practical form of American quiltmaking. The Smithsonian holds comparable Nine Patch examples from 1890–1900 using roller-printed florals, geometrics, stripes, and checks.
About the Pattern
The Nine Patch is one of the oldest and most enduring pieced quilt patterns, constructed from nine squares arranged in a simple three-by-three grid. Here, the maker used changing combinations of light and dark fabrics in each block, allowing the humble pattern to showcase an unusually rich variety of period textiles.
Fabric
A wonderful collection of roller-printed cottons, calicos, shirtings, checks, stripes, florals, and small-scale geometric prints in earthy browns, burgundy, red, pink, cream, black, and gray. The golden-orange printed cotton used throughout the setting gives the quilt its distinctive warmth and visually ties the many different scraps together.
Condition
Good antique condition with visible age and use, including scattered fading, thinning, fabric loss, and areas where the batting is exposed. The extensive hand quilting and much of the original piecing remain beautifully preserved.
