Hand pieced and hand quilted, this striking Triple Irish Chain quilt combines intricate scrappy chains with large expanses of delicate pink-and-white print. Tiny squares of indigo, red, black, yellow, checks, plaids, and shirtings travel across the quilt in interlocking chains, creating remarkable movement against the soft pink blocks.
Historical Period
Circa 1880–1900. The varied indigos, mourning blacks, reds, shirtings, checks, and plaids are characteristic of the broad assortment of cotton fabrics used in late-19th-century scrap quilts.
About the Pattern
The Triple Irish Chain expands upon the traditional Irish Chain with multiple interlocking rows of pieced squares, producing a denser and more elaborate lattice. The large open areas between the chains offered makers beautiful spaces for hand quilting.
Condition
Fair antique condition with considerable age-related wear, including scattered fabric loss, exposed batting, discoloration, staining, fading, and weakened fabrics. Despite its wear, the quilt retains its beautiful hand quilting and wonderfully varied collection of period textiles.
