Description
Hand pieced and hand quilted, this striking Flying Geese quilt features rows of pieced triangles framed by wide red-and-white sashing. An eclectic collection of indigo blue, black, brown, soft pink, cream, and green prints gives each block its own character while the bold red lattice unifies the design. Dense hand quilting creates a beautifully rippled surface, and the quilt’s fading, worn fabrics, exposed batting, and small losses speak to more than a century of use and history.
About the Pattern
Flying Geese is a traditional quilt pattern built from repeating triangles said to resemble geese traveling in flight. Here, the maker arranged the geese into individual scrappy blocks, alternating colors and directions to create movement across the quilt. The broad red sashing gives the varied blocks structure and makes the triangular pattern especially graphic.
Fabrics
A wonderfully varied assortment of period cottons includes indigo and dark prints, tiny florals, plaids, stripes, dots, geometrics, and soft dress prints in pink, brown, cream, green, and black. The subdued plaid backing adds to the quilt’s utilitarian character. The fabric palette and prints are consistent with a working date around the turn of the 20th century.
Condition
Fair antique condition with visible age and wear. Scattered fabric loss, thinning, small holes and tears, exposed batting, fading, and worn areas are present throughout. These signs of use contribute to the quilt’s wonderfully timeworn character.
