Hand pieced and hand quilted, this antique Crazy Flying Geese quilt is a striking example of improvisational American patchwork. Built from angular flying geese units arranged in varied star-like and geometric formations, the quilt has a lively, almost kaleidoscopic movement across the surface. A soft palette of sky blue, indigo, faded pink, taupe, cream, and black gives it both graphic impact and a beautifully timeworn charm.

Historical Period

Late 19th century to early 20th century, circa 1880s–1900

About the Pattern

This quilt is best described as a Crazy Flying Geese variation, using classic flying geese units in an unusually free and improvisational way. Rather than repeating a strict block pattern, the maker varied the arrangement of triangles from block to block, creating shifting star, pinwheel, and directional forms across the quilt top.

Fabric & Construction

The quilt is pieced from a wide assortment of cotton shirtings, plaids, checks, stripes, and small printed dress fabrics, many likely repurposed from household and garment textiles. It is entirely hand pieced and hand quilted, with simple linear quilting over a plain backing that emphasizes its practical, utility-made character.

Condition

A true survivor, the quilt shows extensive wear consistent with age and use, including fabric loss, fraying, thinning, fading, exposed batting, and age toning throughout. These signs of wear reflect its long life as a well-used household quilt and contribute to its authenticity and character.
