#. Faded Blue Double Irish Chain Heirloom Quilt Circa 1890-1920
Circa 1890-1920
Size: 74”x83”
Light Weight
Pattern: Double Irish Chain
Condition: Well-loved. Significant age-related wear, particularly in the red fabrics, with areas of shattering, splitting, thinning, and fabric loss visible throughout the border and in some pieced sections.
Handwashed and line dried
Hand pieced and hand quilted, this refined Double Irish Chain quilt is worked in a soft and understated palette of white and pale blue. Tiny blue squares join to form interlocking chain paths that travel diagonally across the quilt, creating a graceful lattice over a crisp white ground. The open white spaces give the design an airy, spacious quality, while the pale blue border quietly frames the composition. Fine hand quilting adds a gentle layer of texture across the surface, softening the geometry of the piecing and giving the quilt a calm, luminous presence. Restrained in color yet visually rich in pattern, it is a beautiful example of classic American quilt design expressed with simplicity and elegance.
Historical Period
Likely late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890s–1920s.
About the Pattern
The Double Irish Chain is one of the best-known and most enduring American quilt patterns. Built from small squares arranged in linked chain formations, the pattern creates a repeating network of interlocking paths across the quilt top. In a Double Irish Chain, two chain rows cross and repeat, producing a more intricate lattice effect than the simpler Single Irish Chain. The large open areas between the chains were often left plain, as seen here, allowing the chain design itself to stand out clearly. This pattern was especially popular in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries because it combined strong visual structure with efficient use of small fabric pieces.
Fabric
The quilt appears to be made from lightweight cottons in white and pale blue, with the chain pattern pieced from many small hand-sewn squares. The pale blue fabric has a delicate, washed tone that contrasts softly against the white background rather than sharply, giving the quilt a quiet and harmonious look. A narrow blue border echoes the color of the chain and provides a simple, balanced finish. The backing is plain and light in tone, consistent with practical domestic quiltmaking of the period.
Condition
Overall, the quilt appears to be in good antique condition with gentle wear consistent with age and use. There is soft overall fading, slight puckering and irregularity from hand quilting, and minor signs of age that are typical of an early cotton quilt. The pale palette and subtle contrast make the handwork especially visible, and the quilt retains a graceful, well-preserved appearance.

*Disclaimer: Please remember that you’re purchasing a quilt that is decades—sometimes well over a century—old. Signs of age are part of their story. I do my best to photograph and describe any condition issues honestly.
You may find:
• Fading or discoloration
• Small stains or age spots
• Light wear, thinning, or fabric repairs
• Minor imperfections consistent with age and use
Each of these are little piece of American history—stitched by hand from cotton, feed sacks, flour sacks, clothing, and treasured scraps by women who made beauty from what they had. Every quilt carries a story, and it’s been an honor to help preserve these heirlooms for the next generation.
