#. Poppy Applique Cutter Quilt Circa 1930-1940
Circa 1930-1940
Size: 85”x70”
Medium Weight
Pattern: Floral Appliqué
Condition: Well-loved, significant sun damage to the edges and backing, thinning, holes/tears, staining
Handwashed and line dried
Hand appliquéd and hand quilted, this cheerful quilt features stylized flowers set within a pale yellow lattice on a white ground, with small red cornerstones punctuating the grid. Blossoms in coral red, pink, peach, yellow, and blue are paired with soft green leaves, creating a bright, garden-like composition across the surface. The hand quilting adds lovely movement throughout, with rounded cable and floral motifs stitched across both the front and backing. Close examination suggests that some of the floral appliqués were reworked or secured later by machine, likely as an early repair or reinforcement, adding another layer to the quilt’s life and use.
Historical Period
This quilt was likely made in the 1930s or early 1940s, when floral appliqué quilts were especially popular in American homes. During this period, quiltmakers often balanced practicality with decoration, combining simple pieced structures with cheerful appliquéd motifs inspired by gardens, feedsack prints, and popular domestic design trends of the era.
Materials & Construction
Cotton quilt with white ground, pale yellow sashing, red cornerstones, and appliquéd floral motifs in solid and printed cottons. Pale blue cotton backing. Primarily hand appliquéd and hand quilted, with evidence that some appliqué elements were later machine stitched or reinforced.
Condition
Fair, well-loved condition with age-related wear, scattered staining and discoloration, significant sun damage, thinning, and a few holes/losses to the white ground. Some appliqué edges show wear, and several floral elements appear to have been repaired or reattached later, likely by machine. Overall, it remains a charming and visually striking example of vintage floral appliqué work.

*Disclaimer: Please remember that you’re purchasing a quilt that is decades—sometimes well over a century—old. Signs of age are part of their story. I do my best to photograph and describe any condition issues honestly.
You may find:
• Fading or discoloration
• Small stains or age spots
• Light wear, thinning, or fabric repairs
• Minor imperfections consistent with age and use
Each of these are little piece of American history—stitched by hand from cotton, feed sacks, flour sacks, clothing, and treasured scraps by women who made beauty from what they had. Every quilt carries a story, and it’s been an honor to help preserve these heirlooms for the next generation.
