Circa 1890–1915

Light Weight

Size: 70”x71”

Pattern: Double Nine Patch Chain

Hand pieced and hand quilted, this striking Nine Patch chain quilt is worked in a beautifully restrained palette of indigo blue, deep navy, black, and white. Small Nine Patch blocks are arranged in diagonal formation across the quilt, creating a lively network of intersecting chains that move gracefully over the expansive white ground. The maker used a thoughtful assortment of shirtings and small-scale printed cottons—checks, stripes, dotted fabrics, and occasional double pinks—which give the surface subtle variation and depth while preserving the quilt’s crisp graphic quality. Fine hand quilting throughout lends a softly textured surface and enhances the quilt’s elegant simplicity. With its strong geometry, quiet palette, and generous negative space, this is a particularly appealing example of classic American patchwork.

Historical Period

American, Circa 1890–1915
The quilt’s hand-pieced construction, fine quilting, and use of indigo, black, shirtings, and small-scale printed cottons place it firmly in the late nineteenth to early twentieth century.

Pattern

Double Nine Patch / Nine Patch Chain Variation
This quilt is composed of small Nine Patch blocks set in diagonal progression so that they link together in a chain-like lattice across the quilt top. Rather than reading as isolated blocks, the arrangement creates the effect of crossing pathways, giving the quilt the visual character of a Double Nine Patch variation.

Fabric

Cotton shirtings and dress prints in shades of indigo blue, navy, black, and white, including checks, stripes, dotted prints, and small florals. Several fabrics show the crisp, utilitarian character associated with late nineteenth-century shirtings, while the occasional pink-accented prints add softness and charm. The quilt is backed in a plain light cotton and filled with a thin batting that allows the hand quilting to remain especially visible.

Condition

A well-loved quilt with age-related wear consistent with use. There is scattered staining and discoloration to the white ground, along with areas of fading, fraying, and fabric loss in some of the more delicate printed patches. Several blocks show notable wear, and a few fabrics have deteriorated with age. Even so, the quilt retains a beautifully softened hand, strong overall design, and the visual presence that makes these early chain quilts so compelling.
